Topic #1 How can I get my artwork reviewed? [lane@pacbell.net]

Reviewers and critics generally don't review artists, they review SHOWS. And they don't come to your studio. I've been told that the best way to get reviewed is to have a solo show at a gallery that actively pursues publicity, even notoriety. A lot of galleries take care of the publicity for you -- the tough part is getting them to show you. That's where my suggestions about getting shown may be helpful (see the Walls for Art page). It pays to keep sending out slides, to somewhere, every week. You can't sit back and wait, because they will NOT come to find you.
If your show is in a space that does not do much publicity, like many 'alternative' galleries, you need to do your own publicity. Send a press release about the show and about your work, with at least one GOOD photo, to Bay Area publications -- the newspapers, magazines, Artweek etc. -- always to the entertainment or culture secition editors. The photo should be a black and white glossy, at least 5x7, preferably 8x10. Color photos do not reproduce well. Include a couple of invitations to your show.
